2017 Honda Civic Si Coupe Prototype Previews Production Model

Sorry, Honda purists. The high-strung, naturally aspirated four-cylinders of yore that were so cherished in the Civic Si are going the way of Oldsmobile. We’ve long since entered the turbocharged era and if the new Civic Si prototype is any indication, Honda’s newest sport compact hides torquey turbo power under its front hood.

Whereas the previous generation of Si sported a bespoke 2.4-liter I-4, the Si prototype is powered by a variant of the 1.5-liter turbo four available in the regular car. Honda is keeping details close to its chest at the moment, but we reckon power will be between 215 and 230 hp. In the prototype, this 1.5-liter is hooked up to a slick six-speed manual transmission, but we’d be surprised if an automatic isn’t offered at launch as well.

Underneath the jagged new bodywork, the Si is more sophisticated and new age than ever before. Again, details are scarce, but Honda claims the Si is fitted with an active damper system, active steering system, and a trick limited slip differential.

Visually, the Si is blessedly busy, sporting the requisite body effects and rear spoiler. New 19-inch wheels fill the wheelwells, covering bigger brakes and stiffer springs. Around back, a single center-exit exhaust rounds the hectic design.

Inside, it’s more of the same, in a good way. The wickedly-cool digital gauge cluster remains, now backlit in red rather than the regular teal and blue scheme. New cloth sport seats have a nifty Si embroidered design in the headrests, and the weighty metal shift-knob appears ripped straight from the last generation.

If this doesn’t tickle your performance fancy, don’t fret. The track-ready Civic Type R should make landfall on our shores soon, likely with a 2.0-liter turbocharged motor pushing out a stonking 305 hp to the front wheels.
